How house points and champion students are calculated

Understand event scoring methods, team and bonus points, and the filters used to rank champion students.

Houseplay uses event results to work out house scores and champion students. Once an event is complete, its Scoring Method determines how many points its competitors earn.

House totals and champion-student totals draw on those points in different ways. The sections below explain the scoring methods, team points and filters so you can compare the totals with your school’s scoring rules.

Event points

Scoring methodHow points are awarded
DivisionPoints for each placing come from the selected division. Placings without a specific allocation use All Other. A competitor without a placing receives zero.
StandardsThe result is compared with standards for the event type, gender and student’s grade or competition age. A competitor receives zero if their result is missing or there is no matching standard.
ScoreThe numeric result is used directly as points. A competitor receives zero if the result is empty or is not a number.

Check the event’s results and scoring settings before completing it. Correcting a completed event can change its points. Reopening it removes awarded points until it is completed again.

How house totals are calculated

House Points combines completed event points and Bonus Points for each house. Team event points count once for the team’s house. Bonus points affect house totals only.

How champion students are ranked

Champion Students ranks students within each grade or age bracket and gender. Each assigned team member receives their team’s points in this calculation.

  • Total combines individual and team points.
  • Individual includes individual events only.
  • Team includes team events only.
  • The division filter limits which events count.
  • Top 1, Top 2 and Top 3 limit the displayed ranks in each group.

Students on equal points share a rank. Students with no positive points in the selected view do not appear. These filters do not change the house total.

If a score does not match what you expected, follow the checks in House points or champion totals look wrong.
